Leticia Jimenez
Janet Esteves
"My name is Janet Esteves. I am from Peru. I came to the United States in 2008. I live in Reston, VA. I have 2 jobs Monday to Friday. On the weekend, I study English and computers. In my free time, I like to listen to music, watch movies and go out to eat with my friends. I came to this country to help my family and to get better opportunities. I had many difficulties at the beginning. My main problem was the language. The first years I didn’t care because I worked during the night, and I slept during the day. But when I changed my job, I understood how important English is to make a better life for myself. As I mentioned, I live in Reston. It is 25 miles from here. I use public transportation and it takes me 2 and a half hours to get to my classes. Nevertheless, I will continue coming because I want to study more English and I want to obtain my GED here. I know there is a program in VA, closer to my home, but unfortunately, classes are only one day a week. I think we need more. I prefer to make the trip to DC, and study more days here at the SED Center. On behalf of all the students, thank you, Local 32BJ, SED Center, teachers and staff for our classes. We hope we can continue our classes for a long time to prepare for a better future."
